Volunteering in NH

Volunteer NH.  Our goal is to help you whether you are a volunteer looking for an agency to volunteer with, or an organization setting-up a formal volunteer program, or a legislator looking  for statistics on volunteerism rates in our state,

or a corporation looking to improve on your employee volunteer program, or a non-profit wishing to expand services by setting up an AmeriCorps program or... and the list goes on.

Veterans

Military OneSource can provide help with  parenting and child care, education, relocation, financial and legal concerns, everyday issues (finding services in a local community, consumer issues), emotional well-being, health and fitness, addiction and recovery, adult or child special needs, military life (pre/post deployment, reunion, etc.), work concerns, crisis support, elder care, TRICARE, and much more.

Refugee Resettlement

Lutheran Social Services.  New Hampshire

has a long history of welcoming refugees to our community. Our challenge as a community is

how we welcome these new voices, skills, and cultural gifts into our midst.

International Institute of NH (IINH).  Their mission is to provide assistance and support services to refugee newcomers and their

families as they resettle in New Hampshire, and

to remove barriers and open doors as they

move toward self-sufficiency.

 

Fuel Assistance

Fuel Assistance Program.  The Office of

Energy and Planning (OEP) is responsible for

the statewide administration of the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Block Grant (LIHEAP),  referred to as the Fuel Assistance Program. LIHEAP is federally funded through the US Department of Health and Human Services.

OEP  in turn contracts with six local Community Action Agencies (also known as CAAs) to

provide  service to eligible households.

NH Homeland Security and Emergency Management.  Agency is responsible for coordinating the State’s response to major disasters. This includes natural disasters such

as hurricanes, floods and severe winter storms, and human-caused disasters, such as nuclear power plant accidents or chemical spills. In our Homeland Security function, the Bureau also

works on planning and training to prepare for terrorist attacks.

National Voluntary Organizations Active in Diaster NVOAD coordinates planning efforts by many voluntary organizations responding to disaster. Member organizations provide more effective and less duplication in service by

getting together before disasters strike. Once disasters occur, NVOAD or an affiliated state VOAD encourages members and other voluntary agencies to convene on site. This cooperative effort has proven to be the most effective way for  a wide variety of volunteers and organizations to work together in a crisis.

Agencies with Wide-Ranging Programs

NH Catholic Charities New Hampshire Catholic Charities is the state's largest private, non-profit, social service agency reaching out to the poor and vulnerable of all faiths and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Lutheran Social Services.  In Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont we help to support and improve the lives of people in need every day. Housing Needs

HUD in New Hampshire.  Owning a home is a big part of the American Dream. Here are some resources that can help you buy, maintain and keep your home.

NH Housing Forum.  Lack of safe, affordable housing by large numbers of New Hampshire people undermines the state's economic vitality and the strength and stability of it's families and communities.  We provide education and advocate strong public policies that encourage the development and maintenance of safe affordable housing.

New Hampshire Housing.  New Hampshire Housing is your Statewide Housing Resource! We promote, finance and support affordable housing opportunities and related services for New Hampshire families and individuals, and we serve as the primary source for housing data.

Assisted Living Resources.  These services are designed for adults who qualify for nursing home care and can no longer manage independent living in their own homes.

 

Employment Services

NH Employment Security.  Are you or someone you know out of work? We’re not just the “unemployment office”. NH Employment Security is one of the best kept secrets in state government. I want to change that! We help people find work, their first job or a better job.

Unemployment Compensation.  If you are partially or totally unemployed, this site permits you to file an Application for Unemployment Insurance benefits via the Internet from your home computer or those available in our local offices and public access areas such as libraries and schools.

Job Training Fund.  Talent development is a major component of New Hampshire's economic vitality, and businesses large and small realize the importance of a skilled and educated workforce.  That's why the New Hampshire Job Training Fund was created, and we hope your company is able to take advantage of this matching grant program designed to enhance worker skills and help you stay competitive in the global marketplace.

 

Health and Social Services

Eligibility for Medical Assistance.  The Division of Family Assistance coordinates eligibility determinations for medical assistance for Medicaid and NH Healthy Kids for children under the age of 19, pregnant women, low-income families with children, blind individuals , refugees, non-citizens and seniors and disabled adults.  Healthy KIDS Application (Click to download).

NH Hospital Association.  The Association's mission is to enhance the clinical and economic performance of hospitals, improve public confidence in hospitals, and expand access to coverage and care for the citizens of New Hampshire.

Bi-State Primary Care Association.  Their mission is to foster the delivery of primary and preventive health services to the people of Vermont and New Hampshire with special emphasis on the medically underserved.

Foundation for Healthy Communities is a not-for-profit organization with a mission to improve health and health care delivery in New Hampshire. The Foundation is a partnership involving hospitals, physicians, health plans, home care agencies and other organizations concerned about improving health in our state.

Service Link Resource Centers.  We envision communities that empower and support citizens to make the personal choices that allow them to live as independently as they choose.

Greater Salem Caregivers, 287 Lawrence Road, 603-898-2850. Assistance for the elderly and disabled, rides to medical appointments, in-home visits, help with shopping and provide respite care. The group welcomes volunteers.

Pastoral Counseling Services, Inc. provides psychotherapy and counseling to individuals, couples, families, and groups. Various staff members offer short-term groups and seminars on topics including recovery from sexual abuse, stress management, mindfulness meditation, women’s issues, spiritual direction, clergy support and parenting.

Granite State Independent Living.  A statewide non-profit that recognizes the fact that all of us will need some type of support in the course of our lives. We offer the tools and resources so that individuals can participate as fully as they choose in their lives, families, and communities.

Teen Challenge.  Teen Challenge is soon to celebrate its 50th Anniversary of helping men and women of all ages get free of drug and alchohol addictions.  Congratulations Teen Challenge!

 

Hunger Resources

NH Food Stamp Program is about good nutrition and health. It provides eligible individuals and households with benefits used to purchase food items at a grocery store, supermarket or other participating food retailer. The Food Stamp Program ensures that all recipients have an opportunity to  learn more about purchasing and preparing nutritious meals.

NH Food Bank is a program of New Hampshire Catholic Charities, the New Hampshire Food Bank serves as the only food bank in the state. Our current approach to ending hunger includes developing programs to help educate our member agencies, rolling out a Mobile Food Pantry, and expanding our Operation Frontline program.

Children

Foster Care.  Foster families provide homes for children whose families are unable or unwilling to care for them. Every effort is made to help the child remain with his or her family. Foster parents are asked to provide a supportive atmosphere while the biological parents, agency staff and foster parents work on individual and family issues.

Grace Children's Home.  A faith-based organization encouraging collaboration between Faith-based & Community organizations, with NH DCYF to improve the quality of life for NH's foster children.

Adoption Resources.  New Hampshire Licensed child placing agencies.

Bethany Christian Services.  Bethany Christian Services is a leader not only in international adoption, but in providing critical social services to children in a wide variety of difficult settings.

The Children's Alliance of New Hampshire.  Our vision of the Children’s Alliance of New Hampshire is to be the leading, independent and inspirational voice for children in New Hampshire, widely recognized as the foremost source of accurate data on child well-being and as an educator, convener, collaborator and leader for courageous policy positions and community action and for our focus on building our internal capacity and sustainability.

The New Hampshire Child Advocacy Network (NH CAN) is a network of partner organizations working to improve the health and wellbeing of New Hampshire's children by driving governmental policy, changing budget priorities, and inspiring community action.

 

Seniors

Department for Seniors and Disabled Adults.  Information regarding services in the Bureau of Elderly and Adult Services (BEAS).

Help with Prescription Drugs. Individuals who need help buying prescription medications may find help through the following resources.

Choices for Independence program.  Administered by the Bureau of Elderly and Adult Services, the program provides a wide range of service choices that help seniors and adults with chronic illnesses to continue living independently in their own homes and communities.

ServiceLink Resource Center.  How do New Hampshire seniors find services and programs that meet their daily needs? Where do adults living with disabilities find ways to make the most of their abilities? How do family caregivers find supports for themselves and the people they care for? The answer is ServiceLink, a statewide network of community-based offices that are one phone call away. Their friendly staff will listen to your needs, respect your privacy, and help you find answers.

Searching for a Nursing Home?  Welcome to Nursing Home Compare. The primary purpose of this tool is to provide detailed information about the past performance of every Medicare and Medicaid certified nursing home in the country.

Family Caregiver Respite Grant.  Caring for a frail elderly person aged 60 or older who needs a lot of help with daily needs can at times be frustrating, challenging, lonely and sometimes overwhelming. It is vital that family caregivers have opportunities for breaks (respite) from their caregiving responsibilities.
