What is Speak Out for Military Kids?
The “Speak Out” program is a youth-led, adult supported activity that seeks to give voice to, and educate others about, what it is like to be a military kid. Military and non-military youth join to form a “Speak Out Team.” Then, using assorted means and media, like interviews, written articles, poster boards, photography, and DVD productions, the team creates a project which tells their story and is shared at various youth and/or adult activity events, camps, and organization meetings.
Who can be part of the team?
Youth, ages 13-18, who represent military families AND non-military youth who represent organizations such as 4-H Youth Development, Boys and Girls Club, Scouts, Red Cross, Youth Conservation Corps, and school groups.
How do you get involved?
To be considered for membership on the Speak Out Team, fill out the attached application or find it online at http://extension.unh.edu/4H/documents/SOMKapp.doc. Applications received by July 1st will be given priority. Twelve youth will be selected to attend a Speak Out training from July 13th -17th, on the UNH campus in Durham. Even if you cannot attend the training this summer, you are still welcome to apply for membership on the Speak Out Team. More trainings will be held during the coming school year.
What will happen at Speak Out training?
Teens will have the chance to experience a college campus environment, stay in dorm rooms, eat in a college cafeteria, and take part in activities both on and off campus (lodging and food will be provided). Training will include learning about OMK, how deployments have impacted families in NH, sharing messages through public speaking and multi-media productions, photography and photo-cropping, conducting interviews, and filming and editing. Teens will also have opportunities for fun, like bowling, a movie, a visit to The Works pool and water park, the campus game room, and a fieldtrip to a nearby military installation.
What opportunities will you have as an SOMK Team member? You could . . .
• Attend a camp for military kids this summer and create a multimedia project, like a photo slideshow or DVD production. There are two SOMK project opportunities available at no cost to you: OMK Barry Camp in Berlin, August 5th – 7th and Bear Hill Camp in Allenstown, August 12th – 14th.
• Give presentations throughout the year to adult/youth organizations about what people can do to support military families in their communities.
• Mentor and assist in training new team members.
• Attend up to four team meetings annually.
• Start an SOMK Team in your local area.
Transportation assistance may be available on a case by case basis.
Remember, applications are due July 1, 2008, and space is limited!
