Local Faith and Community-Based Organizations Build their Capacity
Washington, DC – April 11, 2007 – The Institute for Youth Development, through a Cooperative Agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Division of Adolescent and School Health (CDC/DASH), is providing a series of one-day regional workshops for local faith-based and community organizations, youth service providers, abstinence education organizations, recreation agencies, and parent/teacher/student organizations to learn how to build their capacity in four different areas of positive youth development.
-Building partnerships with other youth-serving organizations to provide youth development programming.
-Designing and implementing youth development programs that are research-based and culturally and developmentally appropriate.
-Assessing youth development programming efforts by designing methods and measures to assess program implementation and impact.
-Communicating youth development program successes to various audiences to gain community support.
The next workshop will be held on May 10, 2007 at the Holiday Inn Boston Logan at 225 McClellan Highway in Boston. Parking is complimentary.
There is no-charge for the workshop, but a $25.00 No-Show Fee is required for pre-registration. On-site registration begins at 8:00 am and the conference runs from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm. Please be advised that food will not be provided. Food and refreshments will be available from the hotel. The workshop is limited to two participants per organization. Please see attached registration form for further instructions.
The goal of these one-day workshop events is to build the capacity of youth serving organizations to implement positive youth development efforts to help youth not engage in sexual activity. These workshops will help organizations design and implement youth development programs that develop individual youth assets and create positive environments for youth. These workshops are part of a CDC/DASH national program to help reduce the percentage of HIV-related risk behaviors among school-age youth.
“Faith-based and community organizations are helping to lift people up across this country. The President believes it’s time for the federal government to help these organizations and this workshop is another step toward doing so in Boston,” said Shepherd Smith, IYD President & Founder.
IYD is a non-partisan, non-profit organization that promotes a consistent, comprehensive risk-avoidance message to youth for five harmful risk-behaviors that are inextricably linked: alcohol, drugs, sex, tobacco, and violence. For more information about IYD, go to www.youthdevelopment.org.
